According to NASA, on Saturday, December 11th, an asteroid the size of the Eiffel Tower will enter Earth’s orbital path. The asteroid, named 4660 Nereus, will come within 2.5 million miles from Earth. Technically, per NASA, any object that comes within 120 million miles is deemed a “near-Earth object”. While it may not appear as potentially hazardous as we may think given how far off it will be, any small changes or deviations from the asteroid’s current path could put it on a collision course with the Earth. While NASA will be attempting to slam a spacecraft into a different asteroid named Dimorphos in 2022 to see if they are able to proactively redirect an incoming asteroid, they are not yet inclined to do this to Nereus quite yet.
