Since 1931, spanning the course of 89 years, General Motors had led the United States in Auto Sales. However, in 2021, Toyota surpassed GM by roughly 124,000 vehicles to take the crown as America’s top selling car company. Toyota was able to surpass General Motors during the fourth quarter as GM’s sales declined 43% due to the global chip shortage while Toyota’s sales only fell roughly 30%. GM Spokesman Jim Cain provided a tongue-in-cheek response to the news stating, “I wouldn’t rush out if I were [Toyota] and get a ‘We’re No. 1’ tattoo.”
